Democratic Florida State House candidate Emily Gregory flipped the state’s 87th District from red to blue by defeating Republican candidate Jon Maples on Tuesday. President Donald Trump endorsed Maples in the race.

Not only does the district contain Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and resort, but its voters previously elected a Republican State House Rep. Mike Caruso in the last election cycle by a margin of nearly 20 points and voted for Trump by a margin of nearly 9 percentage points in 2024.

Gregory beat Maples on Tuesday by a margin of just two percentage points and will now fill the seat that Caruso held until last summer, when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) tapped him to become a county clerk and comptroller.

“Mar-a-Lago’s state House district just flipped from red to blue, which should have Republicans worried about their chances this November,” said Heather Williams, chair of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), the official party committee dedicated to electing Democrats to statehouses.

“A Trump +11 district in his own backyard shouldn’t be in play for Democrats, but tonight proves Republicans are vulnerable everywhere,” Williams added.
