Karoline Leavitt shares claim that “angry” God caused earthquake over Charlie Kirk murder

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared an Instagram post on Monday that repeated a claim that the September 10 murder of MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk caused the Christian God to get “angry” and cause an earthquake. Her message seemed especially surprising since conservatives tend to blame adverse weather events on LGBTQ+ people.

Leavitt’s post included a screenshot of a message written on the social media platform X by The Aunty Kitty (@wake_up_girl_3). The X message said, “On the night Charlie was shot, a 4.1 earthquake struck Utah. In scripture, 40 represents trials, 41 signifies a shift. It hit at 5:57 local time, 7:57 Eastern. Acts 7:57 describes Stephen, the first martyr, stoned as the crowd silenced his truth. The Bible says the earth trembles when God is angry. That night, as a voice was silenced, the ground groaned.”

Leavitt reposted the claim along with a one-word response: “Wow.” The website Meidas News noted that, in July, Leavitt suggested that evil spirits maybe have caused technical difficulties in a phone call between Trump and MAGA faith leaders.

In the past, conservatives have blamed queer people for causing the 2024 Los Angeles wildfires, Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, global outbreaks, and (of course) hurricanes. The Utah earthquake happened in Maeser, a region about 150 miles away from Orem, the site of Kirk’s murder.
