Donald Trump had no idea who a reporter was talking about when she asked him about the late Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman (D), who was assassinated, along with her husband, by an evangelical Trump supporter in June.
“Given all of the moving ways that this White House has paid tribute to Charlie Kirk, do you think it would have been fitting to lower flags to half staff when Melissa Hortman, the Minnesota House Speaker, was gunned down by an assassin as well?” the reporter asked, speaking to the many comparisons that have been made between the way the GOP has handled Charlie Kirk’s death and the way it basically ignored Hortman’s.

Despite the reporter including a description of Hortman in her question, Trump replied, “I’m not familiar. The who?”
The reporter repeated her description, and the president said, “Oh. Well, if the Governor had asked me to do that, I would have done that. But the governor of Minnesota didn’t ask me. I wouldn’t have thought of that, but I would’ve if somebody had asked me… Had the governor of Minnesota asked me to do that, I would have done that gladly.”
He failed to mention that at the time, Trump also refused to call the Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), saying Walz is “whacked out” and that calling him would “waste time.”
