Out Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) criticized Republicans for underfunding the Meals on Wheels program by hundreds of millions of dollars while they hosted an “extravagant” dinner with taxpayer money. The Meals on Wheels program delivers food to people who are unable to afford or prepare it.
Pocan said in his speech that House Republicans in an appropriations bill are underfunding Meals on Wheels by $600 million, which would have been enough to feed 1.9 million people.

He said it’s “the largest cut to food assistance in our nation’s history” when taken with cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which passed earlier this year.
Pocan then brought up a dinner hosted by the president’s new “Rose Garden Club” at the White House this past Friday night, which critics said turned the White House into a “private club.” The dinner was held in the area where the Rose Garden once stood, which was recently paved over and decorated to resemble Mar-a-Lago.
Pocan noted that “fudge-filled seven-layer cake” was on the menu for that dinner and joked, “I guess the theme of the White House event was ‘Let them eat cake.'”
