A liberal pundit called out the current presidential administration for its reported plan to send up to $100,000 to each resident of Greenland in order to convince them to support secession, just as the president raised taxes on all U.S. residents last year in the form of tariffs.

“Wait wait wait, while Americans have to pay hundreds of billions of dollars in new tariffs, Trump is going send over $10,000 to each person in *Greenland*?????????” wrote MS NOW’s Chris Hayes on Bluesky. “This is a joke right ?”

Reuters reports that U.S. officials are discussing sending payments of $10,000 to $100,000 to Greenland residents as a bribe to persuade them to secede from Denmark and possibly join the United States.

The president has been obsessed with annexing Greenland, and his administration has pointedly said that military force is not off the table. Greenland, with a population of 57,000, is part of Denmark, a NATO ally. Attacking a NATO member nation would require all NATO nations to join in their defense.

A 2025 poll found that 85% of Greenlanders do not want to join the U.S.

Tariffs are taxes on imported goods that are ultimately passed along to the consumer. The president has repeatedly claimed that several hundred billion dollars in tariffs have been collected so far, although it’s not clear if his numbers are reliable.
