GOP targets trans people & passes law with 6 anti-LGBTQ+ measures. Also, license plates can be gay.

JD Vance suggests trans people are a “domestic terrorist threat” as the FBI undertakes plans to target trans people as terrorists

Why? The suspect in Charlie Kirk’s murder – who is a cisgender man – was reportedly dating his trans roommate. The roommate was shocked to find out what he did. She turned over incriminating text messages to the police, and she has been cooperating with authorities. But the fact that the suspect was even in proximity to a trans person appears to be enough for him to justify targeting a minority.

Why it matters: The administration is using the Charlie Kirk murder to crack down on trans people.

House of Representatives passes 2026 military funding bill with 6 anti-LGBTQ+ amendments

Whose fault is itFour of the six amendments – which include gender-affirming care bans, a Pride flag ban, and a ban on collecting data on LGBTQ+ servicemembers – were introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC).

Why it matters: This is just one of the first major spending bills that the Republican-controlled Congress is working on. They could all end up being used as vehicles to attack LGBTQ+ rights.

Kamala Harris says that she didn’t pick Pete Buttigieg to be her running mate because he’s gay

What she said: “But we were already asking a lot of America: to accept a woman, a Black woman, a Black woman married to a Jewish man. Part of me wanted to say, Screw it, let’s just do it. But knowing what was at stake, it was too big of a risk.”

Why it matters: LGBTQ+ people remain underrepresented in politics. Harris was very supportive of LGBTQ+ rights, but she still worried about the viability of a gay man in an election.

Tyler Robinson, the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s death, told his trans roommate that he had “had enough of his hatred”

What happened: Investigators released text messages Robinson allegedly sent his trans roommate just after shooting Kirk.

Why it matters: The roommate’s replies – “What?????????????? You’re joking, right????” and “you weren’t the one who did it right????” – show that she, the only trans person actually associated in any way in this shooting, was just as shocked as anyone to hear about the violent act.

You can now get a license plate that says “GAY” in the state of Ohio

The license plates the state BMV didn’t allow: QUEER, HOMO, LESBIAN. But they allowed other license plates that said STR8, STR8 PWR, NO GAYS, NO HOMOS, and NO F**S.

Why it matters: It’s a win for free speech at a time when the First Amendment is under attack.
