A censure resolution against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for her comments about Charlie Kirk failed after four Republicans sided with House Democrats in Omar’s favor.
Proposed by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) – who, hypocritally, has made a name for herself by spewing vicious and inflammatory rhetoric – the resolution falsely claimed Omar celebrated Kirk’s assassination and sought to strip Omar of her committee assignments.

In an interview with British Broadcaster Mehdi Hasan the day after Kirk’s murder, Omar called Kirk’s death “mortifying.”
“All I could think about was his wife, his children,” she said, adding, “My heart does break for those babies.”

While condemning his killing, she also pointed out that those praising Kirk for being a civil debater are incorrect.
“These people are full of s**t,” she said, “and it’s important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness.”
“There is nothing more effed up than to pretend that his words and actions haven’t been recorded and in existence for the last decade or so,” she said.
In a press release introducing the censure resolution, Mace claimed Omar’s comments amounted to “mocking” Kirk’s assassination. Mace also said Omar “refuses to condemn the loss of innocent lives when it doesn’t suit her agenda.”
Hasan came to Omar’s defense on X, writing that “no one said he deserved to die” and that Omar said “the exact opposite.”
“She condemned his killing,” Hasan emphasized. “And she said her heart goes out to Kirk’s widow.”
In the wake of Kirk’s death, Republicans have pushed the bounds of free speech and sought to criminalize anyone speaking ill of the late Christian nationalist, who regularly denigrated marginalized communities. Progressives, on the other hand, have spoken about how it is possible to condemn the murder without glorifying who Kirk really was.
The House voted 214-213 against censuring Omar. Before the vote, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) called Mace a “complete and total disgrace.”
“Her racist, unhinged and xenophobic comments about Congresswoman Ilhan Omar are beneath the dignity of the Congress,” he said. “Is this what civility looks like in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives?”
After the resolution failed, Mace slammed the four Republicans who voted alongside 210 Democrats, saying they “didn’t stand with Charlie Kirk” or “with the millions of Americans mourning his death.”
“They stood with the one who mocked his legacy,” Mace said. “They showed us exactly who they are, and we won’t forget.”

When Mace introduced the resolution, a spokesperson for Omar called out the lawmaker’s hypocrisy, slamming the so-called party of free speech for “punishing and silencing those who exercise that right.”
“[Omar] has routinely condemned political violence, no matter the political ideology,” the spokesperson added. “The same can’t be said about those who authored these resolutions.”
“In her interview, she also grappled with his divisive legacy, but she in no way implied violence was deserved, nor did she celebrate his death. It is shameful that Republican Members of Congress celebrated those who attacked cops on January 6, made jokes about the attack on Paul Pelosi, and mocked the assassination of [former Minnesota state legislator] Melissa Hortman while Democrats are united in condemning political violence.”
Indeed, Mace herself uses anti-trans slurs almost daily and constantly mocks trans people simply for who they are. Most recently, she said trans people are “the most egregious, most vile, violent people on earth” and “should be in a straitjacket with a hard-steel lock on it.”
Nevertheless, Mace does not appear to believe any alleged disrespect is acceptable when it comes from Democrats.
Mace’s attacks on Omar have also erupted into a social media sparring match between the two lawmakers, with Mace resurrecting a disgusting and long-used rightwing attack on the Somali-American Congresswoman that Omar married her brother.
Omar never married her brother, but that hasn’t stopped conservatives like Donald Trump, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and now Nancy Mace, from saying it.
Please take your brother husband with you and stay there.

After Mace told Omar she wants her “deported back to Somalia,” Omar replied, “Would love to see you get the help you need next. You belong in rehab, not Congress.”

Omar accused Mace of having a “mental breakdown” and said she should not be allowed to continue working in Congress in her current state.
“This is an emergency, let’s help her before she hurts herself or one of us,” Omar said.
She also mocked Mace after a New York Times reporter wrote that Mace had poster or reposted about Omar more than 75 times between her two X accounts. In response, Omar tagged Mace alongside a Mean Girls GIF featuring Regina George asking, “Why are you so obsessed with me?”
In an interview with Huffpost, Mace had only two words to say about Omar, “F**k her.”
