Long-running daytime soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful is introducing its first-ever gay male couple.

As Deadline reports, Hacks, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and American Horror Stories alum Harrison Cone has been cast to play an aspiring young fashion designer on series, which has aired on CBS since 1987. Harrison’s character — whose name is being withheld so as not to spoil his connection to another major character — will be in a relationship with out actor Christian Weissmann’s Remy Pryce.

Despite being set within the world of haute couture fashion, Weissmann and Cone’s characters’ love story marks the first time in The Bold and the Beautiful’s 38-year history that it has featured a gay male couple. According to Deadline, the characters will kiss on-screen, marking another first for the 77-time Daytime Emmy-winning series.

But the show has been something of a trailblazer when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation on daytime TV. As Deadline notes, The Bold and the Beautiful introduced its first same-sex couple, Karen Spencer (Joanna Johnson) and Danielle (Crystal Chappell), in 2012 — though Chappell’s character was initially introduced as Karen’s “friend.”

The following year, the series introduced ex-con and aspiring fashion model Maya Avant, played by cisgender actress Karla Mosley. In 2015, the scheming character who viewers “loved to hate” was revealed to be transgender. While wildly problematic, Maya is nonetheless considered not only daytime TV’s first transgender series regular, but also the first trans character ever to be depicted as a bride on American television.

Cone’s character will make his first appearance on The Bold and the Beautiful on September 16. On Thursday, Weissmann, who joined the series last year, reposted the Deadline announcement via his Instagram stories, including an “official statement”: “Remy’s queer and we all cheered,” the actor wrote.
