“Proud transphobe” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) started screaming uncontrollably on the House floor today after LGBTQ+ ally Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA) gave a speech in support of gender-affirming care, which Mace is trying to ban with an amendment in a military spending bill.

Jacobs presented an observation that many trans people have made, which is that gender-affirming care is something that everyone – including cisgender people – can undertake, that many procedures that cis people don’t think of as gender-affirming care are actually things they do to affirm their genders, and that’s OK because it’s OK for someone to want to present themsleves in a way that aligns with their gender identity, no matter whether they’re cis or trans.

“I think it’s very interesting that my colleague from South Carolina is so obsessed with the issue of trans people, using horrible slurs to talk about them,” Jacobs said in a speech about the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a military funding bill. Mace — aka Jacobs’ “colleague from South Carolina” — is trying to amend to ban coverage for gender-affirming care. Mace has a history of using anti-trans slurs on social media, at campaign events, and at the Capitol.

“Many people in this body have received gender-affirming care,” Jacobs continued. “Filler is gender-affirming care.”

“Botox is gender-affirming care. Lots of my colleagues have received gender-affirming care.”

“Let me be clear: I think everyone should have access to the gender-affirming care that they need, and I think we should respect everybody in this country.”

Shouting could then be heard from elsewhere in the room.

“Ridiculous!” Mace shouted when she found a mic. “You’re absolutely ridiculous!”

“The gentlelady is not recognized,” the chair said. Her mic was cut, and she could still be heard shouting.

“The House will be in order,” he said, trying to restore order as Mace continued to shout.
