Conservatives are piling on the trans community in the wake of a mass shooting yesterday that may have been committed by a trans person, even though the vast majority of shootings in the U.S. are perpetrated by cis men, and these Republicans have not blamed cis identity in the past for mass shootings.

“Today’s evil church school shooter was a trans who was likely groomed and transitioned as a teenager,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) wrote on X just hours after the shooting. There is no evidence that the alleged shooter was “groomed,” which is a term for trust-gaining techniques used by child sex abusers.

Greene said that this means her federal ban on gender-affirming care for minors “MUST PASS,” even though the alleged shooter was 23 years old and it’s not known if they even sought gender-affirming medical care.

“Gender dysphoria is a mental illness and children are being targeted by the multi billion dollar medical and pharmaceutical industry,” Greene wrote. “If they are willing to destroy themselves and how God made them then they are willing to destroy others and we saw that happen today.”
