Self-described “proud transphobe” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) cancelled a speaking engagement moments before it was set to begin because only eight people showed up.

The candidate for South Carolina governor was reportedly planning to speak at an event hosted by hate group Moms for Liberty and expected about 100 people to attend.

But when she arrived, only eight voters – not including security or press – had come to hear her talk about parents’ rights in education.

“Mace and her team entered through a side door, walked past the stage where she had been set to speak, and went into a back room,” reported My Horry News, a publication focused on South Carolina’s Horry County, which Mace reportedly considers critical to a victory. After cancelling the speech, Mace instead answered questions from reporters and met with the people who did come.

Mace announced her gubernatorial campaign earlier this month and has centered her campaign around rolling back rights for transgender people. Her video announcing her campaign mentioned no policy issue other than trans rights, which it brought up in multiple ways.

At a campaign event soon after she announced her campaign, she repeated anti-trans slurs and got mad when called out. She also asked the president to put her name on a women’s bathroom at his presidential library to honor her for her opposition to trans rights.

Despite the low turnout, internal data released by her campaign claims Mace is leading her Republican opponents with 25% support, with second and third place candidates Alan Wilson and Ralph Norman trailing her at 17% and 10% respectively.
